How to Reduce 4K/8K Video File Size to 90% Smaller

- I have recorded many broadcast TV AVCHD Video (.mts) files using Proscan "over-the-air" digital converter box. The trouble is that an hour's worth of HD programming uses up 5~6GB on my flash drive. That is a lot space to store a single 1 hour video! Is there any good video size reducer that will make those large videos smaller without losing too much quality?

High-definition videos are quite common for the popularity of HD & 4K screens and cameras. But their big size makes it hard to share on web or store on portable devices. For instance, a 1920x1080 M2TS or MKV video is not supported by YouTube and nearly all smartphones; uploading an HD video to web may take hours; you can't send a homemade video via email as it exceeds the maximum size limits; the hard drive or phone gets occupied soon with 4K recordings... It is necessary to make them smaller to fit the size limitations or fasten transmission speed. How to reduce video file size without losing quality?

Best HD/4K Video Compressor to Reduce Large Video Size Easily

WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe, the best video size reducer, is able to compress 8K/4K/HD/big-sized videos (like MP4, MKV, AVI, M2TS, AVCHD, etc.) to HEVC, H.264, FLV or other highly-compressed format; downsize 8K/4K to HD videos; cut unwanted parts, commercials, etc. to make lage videos 90% smaller without quality loss. Easily reduce videos in order to save hard drive storage, play on portable devices, upload to YouTube/Facebook, send via email or Skype, etc.

How to Make Large Videos to 90% Smaller without Quality Loss?

Step 1 Convert Video to Smaller Formats

Converting HD/4K videos to best codec is the easiest way to keep video file sizes small. What are the best formats can output small video size?

  • HEVC/H.265 – It features 50% higher data compression ratio compared to H.264 so that it can deliver the same quality at a lower bit rate. Though HEVC can produce a UHD video with smaller size, it requires great hardware power for flawless playback and is not well compatible with older computers or devices.
  • H.264/AVC – It's the most efficient video compression standard for high data compression ratio and great quality before the release of HEVC. Generally speaking, H.264 is the best choice for users who want to store video with smaller size for it has lower system requirements and higher compatibility.
  • FLV – It is also known as Flash video and used to deliver video over the Internet using Adobe Flash Player. FLV format has smallest video size suitable for video-sharing websites but the quality is not so good.

WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe is a powerful video compressor that's capable of converting any videos (MKV, MTS, AVCHD, AVI, MOV, etc.) to MP4, H.264, HEVC/H.265, FLV, WMV, 3GP, and more with crisp images and lossless audios. Thanks to Hyper-threading technology, Multi-core and Hardware Encoder (Intel & Nvidia & AMD) support, it can achieve a super fast video converting speed.

Step 2 Adjust Resolutions, Bitrates, and other Parameters

Resolution, frame rate and bit rate are three keys to affect video file size mostly. If you have gotten some big-sized H.264 files, you can reduce video file size by rearranging those parameters using the same video file reducer.

Reduce Video File Size
Adjust video parameters

Step 1. Lower Resolution: Click on Settings button -> Video Options -> click the drop-down menu of Resolution -> choose an option that is lower than the original -> OK

Step 2. Reduce Frame Rate: Click on Settings button -> Video Options -> click the drop-down menu of Frame Rate -> choose an option that is lower than the original -> OK

Step 3. Reduce Bit Rate: Click on Settings button -> Video Options -> Bit Rate (Quality) -> choose VBR -> choose a bit rate option that is lower than the original / manually set the data of Bit Rate to a smaller one -> OK. Note: 1. HEVC codec will lower bit rate automatically. 2. The reduction of bit rate may result in quality degradation in varying degrees.

For Your Reference:
Video Size = time x bit rate (frame rate x resolution)
1GB (1024 x 1024 kb) = 100 min (6000s) x 174 kbps

Step 4. Reduce Audio Channel: Click on Settings button -> Audio Options -> Channel -> Choose the lowest number such as 2 (means 2 channels) -> OK

Step 3 Cut Unwanted Parts from the Video Clips

Not every frame of video should be preserved. You can discard title sequences/epilogue which presents movie title, production, casting or filming titbits, and About Author segment of videos downloaded online. • Compression ratio: Without changing video resolutions as well as fame rate, the compression ratio of converting an AVI video to MP4 (HEVC) video is about 84%, the quality of output video file will be well kept, and no obvious video degradation is noticeable.

• Our Verdict: MP4 has better compression ratio than AVI. That is to say, if at the same file size (or bit rate), an MP4 video will have a better quality than an AVI video. Read: AVI vs MP4 >>
