Is Torrenting Legal and Safe?
Yes, torrenting technology itself (P2P file sharing) is generally legal itself. However, downloading or distributing copyrighted movies without permission is illegal in most countries. Downloading public domain or open-license films is completely fine, but downloading commercial blockbusters from torrent sites can lead to ISP warnings, internet throttling, or copyright fines.
Torrenting also carries inherent security risks, including malware infection, fake download links, and IP exposure:
Public trackers: Sites like The Pirate Bay or 1337x are accessible to anyone, making them common targets for malicious uploads (e.g., .exe malware disguised as movie files).
Private trackers: Require member invites and enforce strict moderation, making them significantly safer, though copyright risks remain.
To stay safe while torrenting, check file extensions and ensure the downloaded movie is in video formats like .mp4, .mkv, etc instead of .exe or .bat. Make sure to use a VPN to hide your real IP address from copyright trackers and publick swarms. Additionally, download torrents with high seeder counts and positive user feedback to avoid malicious files.
With these legal and security considerations in mind, let's compare seven popular movie torrent sites, looking at their content libraries, key features, and potential limitations.
7 Best Free Torrents Download Sites in 2026
How We Evaluated These Sites
To ensure the recommendations are accurate and safe for 2026, we tested each torrent site using a standardized benchmark criteria:
- Ad Safety & Security: We evaluated ad density, pop-under behavior, and third-party redirect threats when using standard browsers. Results may vary by browser, region, device and ad-blocker settings.
- Active Seeder Ratio & Download Speed: We measured average download speeds for popular 1080p and 4K movie releases to verify active seeder health and link stability.
- Content Indexing & Update Speed: We assessed how quickly new releases, classic movies, and full-season packs are indexed, as well as the completeness of media info (IMDb scores, codecs, audio bitrates).
- Verification System & Community Health: We checked for trusted uploader badges (e.g., VIP/Trusted status on TPB and 1337x) and the presence of fake/malicious file reports from active users.
# 1. The Pirate Bay
- Site: thepiratebay.org
- Torrent Type: Public
- Ads Contained: YES (Heavy pop-under ads; ad-blocker recommended)
- Instant Download: Support one-click magnet links (requires torrent client)
The Pirate Bay is the most well-established torrent download site with plenty of seeders and trusted uploader badgess. The 23-year-old torrent site has undergone several server raids, shutdowns and domain seizures due to historical copyright enforcement, yet its decentralized network persists in 2026.
The site does not host actual movie files. Rather, it indexes torrent metadata and DHT magnet links that users can access through torrent clients. It serves as a torrent directory where you can find a wide range of content—including 4K/1080p movies, music, video games, software, and adult material—making it one of the most popular sources for locating movie torrent magnet links.
From my experience, please always check for the Green Skull (VIP) or Pink Skull (Trusted) icons next to the uploader's name. This indicates more established or trusted uploaders and can avoid corrupted files or malware. Don't click the Download button that looks too flashy, which is often ads. Instead choose the small magnet icon hidden near the file title. You can also click the SE header to sort by the highest number of seeders if you want a stable file. This can ensure your movie downloads quickly and completely.
#2. LimeTorrents
- Site: limetorrent.net
- Torrent Type: Public
- Ads Contained: YES
- Instant Download: Magnet link / torrent file.
LimeTorrents has been around since the late 2009 and has remained one of the well-known public torrent sites. This torrent site is updated frequently with new torrents, offering a large library of torrents, including movies, TV shows, music, games, apps, animes, and other contents. It has a clean interface so users can easily find their torrent movie download.
Most movie uploads range from 720p to 1080p HD with file sizes typically between 1.5 GB and 4 GB, alongside anime releases featuring original audio and English subtitles. Most torrents have a large number of seeds, especially the hot torrents. It is easy to navigate the torrent site, you can sort torrents by seed for faster download speeds. Be sure not downloading torrents that had a few seeds and ensure to have an ad blocker since it has some ads on the list.
#3. 1337X
- Site: https://1337x.to/
- Torrent Type: Public
- Ads Contained: Some (fewer than other torrent sites)
- Instant Download: Magnet links or .torrent file.
1337x is a popular torrent website offering a directory of movies, games, apps, and movie torrent magnet links for peer-to-peer file sharing via BitTorrent. It is particularly favored for hosting high-efficiency x265 encodes, 1080p Web-DLs, and 4K HDR releases with multi-language audio tracks.
1337x remains highly regarded within P2P communities, frequently recognized by industry reports for its active verification system and strict VIP/Trusted Uploader badges. It features a quick-access search engine for discovering free material, but has faced legal issues due to copyright concerns, leading to Google blocking its URLs. So if you're running into those "site unreachable" errors, it's usually a geo-block or DNS issue. You can try these mirror sites like 1337x.st, x1337.cc, or x1337x.ws, except for the official primary site 1337x.to, to download files.
Using the free movie torrent download site is simple, just install your torrent client like uTorrent or qBittorrent, navigate to the movie torrent you want to download on 1337x, choose a torrent's magnet link or .torrent file and click on it, and start downloading the torrent.
#4. YTS (Originally YIFY)
- Site: yts.gg (also operates via yts.ms / yts.bz)
- Torrent Type: Public
- Ads Contained: Some
- Instant Download: Magnet links or .torrent file.
YTS, also known as the new domain for YIFY movies, is arguably the best torrent website for high-quality movie downloads in relatively small files. So if you have low storage or use a mobile device, YTS is a perfect pick since it reduces the file size of a 4K movie to around 3-6GB in my testing.
Like other torrenting sites, YTS offers trending movie torrents like Balls Up, The Legend of Aang, upcoming YIFY movies such as Podlasie movie torrent, or you can directly browse preferred movies before you download movie torrent. Movies are available in 720p, 1080p, or even 4K, along with options like subtitle download, IMDB rating, rotten tomatos critics.
However, you cannot find TV shows, games, or software here and its popularity has also attracted controversy. While it's been a popular choice for many, concerns have arisen regarding malware, malicious ads, and phishing scams associated with the platform. Now this torrent site has recently switched from a .bz to .mx domain due to the legal trouble.
Due to continuous legal issues and DNS blocking, the platform has frequently migrated its primary entry points from .mx to .lt, .bz, and yts.gg. Always verify you are on an official domain and use an ad blocker, as clicking magnet buttons can trigger intrusive pop-up redirects.
#5. EZTV
- Site: eztvx.to
- Torrent Type: Public
- Ads Contained: Yes
- Instant Download: Magnet links or .torrent file
EZTV is a well-established torrent site primarily dedicated to TV shows. Known for its reliable service and extensive collection, EZTV offers a relatively outdated interface, but it is easy to search and download your favorite television content via magnet links or .torrent files. With features like quality filtering, it's a popular choice for TV enthusiasts seeking high-quality downloads like 720p, 1080p, and 4K, along with file size, seeds, release date, aspect ratio, format, codec, bitrate, language, etc.
While EZTV offers a range of TV show torrents, it has been flagged by some security services for low trust scores. This site's domain has changed over time. Users are recommended to exercise caution when accessing the torrent site.
#6. Torlock
- Site: torlock.com
- Torrent Type: Public
- Ads Contained: Yes (Warning: Heavy Pop-up Ads)
- Instant Download: Yes
Torlock is a reputable torrent search engine known for its commitment to quality. There are over 12 million torrents on the site, offering a vast collection of verified torrents across various categories, making it a popular choice for downloading movies, TV shows, music, games, software, anime, ebooks, and more. Each torrent features size, seeders, peers, and time when it was added next to it. Torlock's unique financial reward system incentivizes users to report fake torrents, ensuring a high-quality and safe user experience.
However, make sure you use an ad blocker like uBlock Origin when you use the torrent site, as it is full of annoying ads and some adult content. This will save you from a lot of annoying pop-ups and keep your experience focused on the content you actually want.
#7. EXT.to
- Site: EXT.to
- Torrent Type: Public
- Ads Contained: Yes (Pop-up ads present; ad-blocker recommended)
- Instant Download: Yes (Supports magnet links and .torrent downloads)
EXT.to is another straightforward, no-frills torrent site that welcomes many new users after TorrentGalaxy's disappearance last year. It has a vast library of verified torrents, including movies, TV shows, music, adult, books, games, anime, and apps.
Like many other torrent sites that offer detailed torrent information such as file size, age, seed, leech, comments, etc and support magnet links for peer-to-peer downloading, EXT also built a strong community and attracts millions of monthly visitors. Each listing offers comprehensive details, including IMDb rating, genres, directors, cast, plot as well. This allows me to verify the quality of a file instantly. While the torrent site is efficient and community-driven, it does contain intrusive ads. So make sure to use a reliable ad blocker before accessing the content.

Discontinued & Inactive Torrent Sites to Avoid
The following platforms were once pillars of the peer-to-peer ecosystem but are no longer active, safe, or officially maintained as of 2026. This history is included for reference and cyber-safety purposes only. Users should exercise extreme caution, as active domains using these names are highly likely to be malicious clones or phishing mirrors.
#1. RARBG
- Status: Permanently Closed (Since May 2023)
- Risk Factor: High (Unofficial clones often contain intrusive tracking scripts and aggressive redirects)
Founded in 2008, RARBG was historically celebrated for its heavily moderated database and verified high-quality movie releases. Although the original team completely ceased operations in May 2023 due to rising operational costs, numerous unofficial mirror sites still abuse the RARBG brand. These lookalike domains often deploy malicious pop-ups and fake download buttons that can compromise device security.
#2. Torrent9
- Status: Inactive / Highly Unstable
- Risk Factor: Moderate to High (Frequent domain seizures and malicious copycats)
Torrent9 was traditionally a popular public tracker within French-speaking P2P circles, known for its extensive catalog of dubbed and subtitled content. Due to severe legal and copyright pressures, the platform has faced continuous domain seizures. The remaining proxy sites under this name are highly unstable, heavily cluttered with aggressive redirects, and no longer recommended for safe browsing.
#3. Torrentz2 (Alternative to Torrentz)
- Status: Officially Defunct
- Risk Factor: High (Phishing scams and fake search indexes)
As the unofficial successor to the original Torrentz meta-search engine, Torrentz2 once indexed millions of active torrents across multiple external databases to speed up file discovery. However, the official platform was permanently shut down following severe legal actions. Any site currently operating under variations like Torrentz2.eu.com or Torrentz2.io consists entirely of dangerous clones utilizing shady scripts that endanger user privacy.
How to Choose Healthy and Safe Movie Torrents
To avoid slow downloads and malicious files, users should check torrent health indicators before clicking the magnet link:
- Seeders vs. Leechers Ratio: Always select torrents with a high Seeder-to-Leecher ratio. Seeders hold the complete file, ensuring faster download speeds and stable connections. A torrent with zero seeders will never complete.
- Verified Uploader Badges: On sites like 1337x or The Pirate Bay, look for green or blue VIP/Verified icons. These uploads are scanned by community moderators for safety.
- File Size Consistency: Check if the file size matches the resolution. A 1080p full-length movie is typically 1.5 GB to 3 GB. If a file claiming to be a 4K movie is only 50 MB, it is almost certainly a malicious file or scam script.
When downloading, avoid large, flashy "Download Now" or "Direct Download" buttons, which are almost exclusively third-party ads; instead, use small magnet links or .torrent files. Always check the file extension before opening—legitimate movies come in video formats like .mp4, .mkv, or .avi, while .exe, .iso, .bat, or password-protected .zip files are malicious scripts disguised as video files. Opting for direct magnet links simplifies transfers via DHT metadata, offering a safer and cleaner workflow.
Alternative Solution: Safely Digitize Phsical Movie Collections
If you want to avoid the privacy concerns, copyright risks, and malicious popup ads associated with unverified P2P trackers, digitizing your existing physical disc library (DVDs/Blu-rays) provides a secure, high-quality offline alternative.
Instead of gambling with unverified network seeds, tools like WinX DVD Ripper allow you to backup and convert your personal media collection locally.
It allows you to convert DVDs into 350+ optimized formats, including MP4, HEVC, AVI, MOV, etc and create 1:1 digital copies of your favorite movies while preserving full original video quality, multi-language audio and subtitle tracks.
By shifting from risky network downloads to local digital preservation, you can enjoy seamless movie playback across your iPhone, Android, or Apple TV without exposing your operating system to malware, trojans, or local compliance liabilities.

FAQ about Torrenting
Magnet links have largely replaced traditional .torrent files because they allow direct peer discovery without downloading extra metadata files. Here is how to use them safely: Download a reputable client such as uTorrent or qBittorrent. Then browse a verified torrent site, locate the magnet icon, and click it. Your browser will automatically prompt uTorrent/qBittorrent to open the magnet URI. Confirm the save directory and start your HD movie download.
A .torrent file is a small metadata file saved to your device. It contains information about the files being shared and may include tracker details to help your client find peers. A magnet link is a URI that typically uses a cryptographic info hash to identify the torrent. Instead of downloading a separate .torrent file, a compatible client such as uTorrent or qBittorrent can use the magnet link to retrieve the torrent's metadata through available peer-discovery methods.
Download speed depends on the amount of seeders and leechers available in the peer-to-peer network. In a torrent network, a seeder is a user who shares the complete file, whereas a leecher is simply downloading it. The more seeders a file has, the higher the chances of fast and stable torrent downloads.
A VPN is not required to use torrent sites, but many users prefer to use it for privacy reasons. It can help hide your IP address from other peers in a torrent network. However, users should always comply with copyright laws in their country when downloading or sharing files.
