History of iPhone

There have been nine generations of iPhone hardware, and they have been accompanied by four major releases of iOS (formerly iPhone OS). The original iPhone established design precedents like screen size and button placement that have persisted through all models. The iPhone 3G brought 3G cellular network capabilities and A-GPS location. The iPhone 3GS brought a compass, faster processor, and higher resolution camera, including video. The iPhone 4 has two cameras for FaceTime video calling and a higher resolution display. iPhone 5 features the dual-core A6 processor, increases the size of the Retina display to 4 inches, introduces LTE support and replaces the 30-pin connector with an all-digital Lightning connector. The iPhone 5C features the same A6 chip as the iPhone 5, along with a new backside-illuminated FaceTime camera and a new casing made of polycarbonate. The iPhone 5S features the dual-core 64-bit A7 processor, an updated camera with a larger aperture and dual-LED flash, and the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, integrated into the home button, and fitness tracking facilities. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus further increased screen size, measuring at 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches, respectively.

Hardware - Screen and input: The screen is the dominant feature of the front of the iPhone, and is the main method of user interaction. The touchscreen is a 9 cm liquid crystal display (320×480 px at 6.3 px/mm, 163 ppi, HVGA) with scratch-resistant glass,[19] and 18-bit color (rendering 262,144 colors). The capacitive touchscreen is designed for a bare finger, or multiple fingers for multi-touch sensing. The iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, introduced in 2015, feature "force-touch" displays which allows the screen to recognise how hard it is being pressed. An example of how this technology will be used is lightly pressing the screen to preview a photograph and pressing down to take it.

On September 5, 2007, Apple discontinued the 4 GB models. On February 5, 2008, Apple added a 16 GB model. The iPhone 3G was available in 16 GB and is still available with 8 GB. The iPhone 3GS comes in 16 GB and 32 GB variants. The latest iPhone 6S/6S Plus has 16 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB storage options.

Software: The default Home screen of iOS 9 shows most of the applications provided by Apple. Users can download additional applications from the App store, create Web Clips, rearrange the icons, and create folders.The iPhone runs an operating system known as iOS (formerly iPhone OS). It is a variant of the same Darwin operating system core that is found in Mac OS X. Also included is the "Core Animation"; software component from Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard.
