MakeMKV vs DVDFab: Side-by-Side Comparison

When it comes to rip DVD and Blu-ray discs, some people wonders whether they should choose MakeMKV or DVDFab. In this article, we will give a detailed comparison of MakeMKV vs DVDFab to help make your decision.

Table of Contents

Part 1 MakeMKV vs DVDFab

1. Compatible OS

MakeMKV is compatible with Windows (Windows XP or later, x86 or x64), Mac (x64 Mac OS X 10.7 or later), and Linux (x86 or amd64).

DVDFab can be installed on Windows (10/8.1/8/7) and Mac (10.10-10.15).

2. License

MakeMKV contains both freeware and shareware functionality. It allows users to convert or stream DVD and AVCHD discs for free forever, while Blu-ray disc converting and streaming is free during 30-day trial period. When the trial period expires, you need to buy a registration key.

DVDFab is shareware. It also offers 30-day free trial.

3. Supported discs

MakeMKV can read DVD and Blu-ray discs including those protected with latest versions of AACS and BD+. Please note that MakeMKV beta version may fail to open some HD-DVD discs.

DVDFab supports DVD, Blu-ray, and even 4K UHD Blu-ray discs. Besides discs, it also allows importing ISO files and folders for later processing. Copy-protected sources are also supported.

4. Supported output formats

MakeMKV has only one output format. That is MKV.

DVDFab provides more output options. It can copy your disc or disc file to a blank disc, ISO image, folder, MKV, MP4, AVI, WMV, MP3, and more file formats.

5. Quality

Although MakeMKV can only rip DVD and Blu-ray disc to MKV, but it does lossless MKV. The original quality will be 100% kept.

DVDFab can also maintain the original quality when we choose a lossless backup mode, such as copy DVD to ISO and copy a DVD-9 to DVD-9. As we mentioned above, DVDFab also supports converting DVD to other video formats to make files smaller and have greater compatibility with our players. Due to transcoding involved, there may be some quality loss. The degree of loss in quality depends on your settings.

Please note that lossless rip means big file size. If you don't have enough space, you're suggested to compress the MKV file that MakeMKV exports or directly use DVDFab.

MakeMKV vs DVDFab Summary

By comparison, we find that DVDFab is more powerful than MakeMKV. But if you don't have a budget for a DVD/Blu-ray ripping tool, the straightforward MakeMKV is also worth a try.
