Subtitle is one kind of transcript or screenplay usually displayed on the bottom of screen with the purpose of a visual help for the deaf/hearing impaired and translating dialogs. When using on DVD movies, subtitles are generally hidden unless viewers request it from a menu.

Movie subtitles have two forms, open (hard) subtitles and closed (soft) subtitles. Open Subtitles cannot be removed or turned off for the contents are irrevocably built in video. On the other hand, closed subtitles are mainly used on DVD/Blu-ray allowing viewer to turn on/off or change subtitles if there are multiple language subtitle tracks.
