About Mac OS X

What's the definition of Mac OS X (or simply OS X)? It is a UI operating system (the tenth major version) based on Unix developed by Apple Inc. and used exclusively on current Macintosh computers, including Mac desktops (i.e., iMac, Mac Mini, Mac Pro) and Mac laptop (i.e., MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Pro With Retina). It was the successor to Mac OS 9, released in 1999, the final release of the "classic" Mac OS, which had been Apple's primary operating system since 1984. The 'X' in Mac OS X not only stands for is the Roman numeral 10 but also emphasizes the relation between OS X and UNIX.

What's the rule that Apple Inc. has been naming its computer operating system? Let's find out:

10.0: Cheetah – The first official version of Mac OS X (other than the public Beta version Kodiak), released on March 24, 2001, with countless setbacks, such as slow speed, insufficient apps and incomplete function.

10.1: Puma - The second major release of Mac OS X released on September 25, 2001, increasing DVD playback and some other missing features, such as DVD playbacks, but still lacking some features and was plagued with bugs.

10.2: Jaguar - The third major release of Mac OS X released on August 23, 2002, the beginner to use its code name as part of the branding, having great raw performance improvements, a sleeker look, and many powerful user-interface enhancements, such as Quartz Extreme, iChart and a system-wide repository.

10.3: Panther – The fourth one release on October 24, 2003, incorporating updated Finder, a brushed-metal interfacea brushed-metal interface, Fast user switching, Exposé (Window manager), FileVault, Safari, iChat AV, improved (PDF) rendering and much greater Microsoft Windows interoperability.

10.5: Leopard – The latest update of Mac OS X with released on October 26, 2007, including 300 new features such as a new look, an updated Finder, Time Machine, Spaces, Boot Camp , supporting Intel x86-based Macintosh computers and PowerPC architecture.

10.6: Snow Leopard – based on "under the hood" changes, increasing the performance, efficiency, and stability, supporting greater amounts of RAM, improved support for multi-core processors through Grand Central Dispatch, and advanced GPU performance with OpenCL.

10.7: Lion – The eighth major release of Mac OS X released on July 20, 2011, featuring the enhancements made in iOS including greater multi-touch gestures, as well as Changes in the GUI. To be noticed that from Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion", 64-bit Intel CPUs are utilized instead of previously 32-bit processor.

10.8: Mountain Lion – The ninth released on July 25, 2012, with the improved functions similar to iOS 5, such as include Game Center, support for iMessage in the new Messages messaging application, iCal, iWork, iCloud and Baidu.

10.9: Mavericks – Released on October 22, 2013, it makes it possible for all Mac users to free upgrade from OS X Snow Leopard or later version to it.
