MKV[1] is open source free HD video container format. It uses H.264/MPEG-4 codec and thanks to efficient usage on bandwidth, MKV rapidly bacomes popular HD video format especially on the internet. Part of the problem is that Apple does not support the full H.264 or MPEG4 standards. They've been very slow on implementing advanced features like B-frames. Not entirely up to date on this, so I don't know exactly what all is currently missing from QuickTime's H.264 implementation. So you can encode video with standards-compliant encoders like x264 and wind up with a non-QT-compatible stream. If you don't use the advanced options, though, QT should play it fine.
