August 31, 2010 - Sony Update HXR-NX5U Professional AVCHD Camcorder

Sony announced the first member of the NXCAM family this week - the HXR-NX5U - AVCHD Camcorder. As we wrote in our news piece below, the HXR-NX5U will record AVCHD video to regular Memory Stick Pro Duo cards and SDHC memory cards as well. Sony also announced a prosumer version of the NX5U called the HDR-AX2000. The AX2000 has similar specs to the NX5U, but it is more limited when it comes to connectivity (it has no HD-SDI terminal).

August 19, 2010 - Canon Tiny AVCHD Camcorder That Packs a Mean Punch

Now, Canon announces the release of the HR10 which measures 93mm (h) x 65mm (w) x 133mm (d) and weighs 530g and stores 1080 HD footage onto a 8cm DVD. However, recently Sony announced their latest offering, the Sony AVCHD CX7 which measures 67mm (h) x 69mm (w) x 129mm (d) and weighs a mere 450g and stores footage on a Sony Memory Stick and that explains the slight difference in size.

Just to explain a bit about the AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) format, this allows footage to be captured at different compression rates which uses less storage space and when recorded to DVD creates a longer recording time.

August 12, 2010 - Sony releases new M2TS 3D-ready Blu-ray player

Sony announced its first M2TS 3D Blu-ray player, the BDP-S770, but that won't be the only 3D-capable standalone M2TS Blu-ray player from Sony this year. Wednesday, Sony announced the BDP-S470, a midrange Blu-ray player that's slated to get a firmware update in the summer to make it M2TS 3D capable. In addition, the company announced that three previously announced products--the BDV-E770W, BDV-E570, and BDP-S570-will be getting the same 3D upgrade.
